About the Role

Berrien Veterinary Services is seeking a part-time Kennel Assistant to become an essential part of our exceptional team. As a Kennel Assistant, you will be crucial in maintaining the hospital's cleanliness, caring for our patients, supporting your fellow team members, and delivering outstanding customer service to our clients.

Animal Care and Treatment Responsibilities

  • Restraining patients with assistance
  • Obtaining fecal/urine samples
  • Medicating patients with direct supervision
  • Assisting with nail trims, ear cleanings, or other minor tasks when asked
  • Knowledge of contagious disease and isolation protocol
  • Knowledge of safety protocols when opening cages/walking patients
  • Always maintaining a high standard of patient care
  • Knowledge of certain behaviors of animals
  • The ability to admit or ask questions when directions are unclear

Customer Service Responsibilities

  • Assisting receptionists when needed
  • Filling prescriptions with direct supervision
  • Assisting clients with multiple pets or large purchases
  • Assisting with patient discharge when needed
  • Maintaining compassion, sympathy, and professionalism during high-stress situations

Hospital Cleanliness Responsibilities

  • Following weekly & monthly task lists
  • Daily vacuuming/mopping of the hospital
  • Changing garbage daily
  • Dailey dusting throughout the hospital
  • Cleaning surgery tables & trays
  • Cleaning & maintaining sinks
  • Maintaining clean kennels at all times for hospitalized patients. This includes cleaning litter boxes, changing bedding, and cleaning kennels
  • Replenishing supplies: paper towels, garbage bags, air fresheners, etc.
  • Cleaning kitchen and break areas
  • Overall maintenance of the sights, sounds, and smells of the hospital

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Minimum of 18 years old to work at Berrien Veterinary Services.
  • Genuinely enjoys working with animals and can deal with stressed, ill, or painful patients.
  • Can stay calm and efficient at all times while working.
  • Approaches his/her job duties maturely.
  • Can support and be part of a team; works well with all levels of hospital team members.
  • Has excellent communication skills with clients and other staff members.
  • Can conduct himself/herself confidently and professionally even when stressed and focused on individual tasks.
  • Can work independently on assigned tasks and accept directions on given assignments; can understand and carry out oral and written directions.
